AI University Lecture Series

Lecture 1: Don’t Be afrAId!

This engaging session kicks off the AI University series, designed to help legal professionals understand and leverage artificial intelligence. Experts from Just-Tech discuss the fundamentals of AI, how it works, and its transformative role in the legal field. The session demystifies AI, explores its impact on legal services, and provides practical insights into using AI for document automation, legal research, case management, and knowledge sharing. Join us to learn why AI is a powerful tool—not a threat—and how it can enhance efficiency, accuracy, and access to justice.

Lecture 2: Gen-AI for Gen X, Gen Z, and Boomers

This dynamic session explores how generative AI is transforming the legal profession across generations. Led by legal tech expert Damien Riehl, the discussion delves into AI’s impact on legal research, case strategy, and access to justice. Attendees learn how AI can streamline legal workflows, enhance decision-making, and address the challenges of unauthorized practice of law. The session also tackles key issues like AI hallucinations, ethical concerns, and how AI tools can empower both legal professionals and self-represented litigants. Watch now to discover how AI is reshaping the legal landscape for everyone.

Lecture 3: AI Policy

In this AI University session hosted by Sateesh Nori of Just-Tech, participants explore policies and best practices for using AI in nonprofit legal settings. The session focuses on how organizations can responsibly approach AI integration by weighing three policy models: full freedom to use AI (laissez-faire), strict prohibition, and a moderated, guardrails-based approach. Through rotating breakout groups, attendees discuss the risks (such as data security and ethical concerns) and benefits of AI, aiming to collaboratively draft practical policies. Guest speakers Ransom Wydner (650) and Conor Malloy contribute insights from the tech and legal compliance world, emphasizing the importance of protecting sensitive client information while exploring AI’s potential.

Lecture 4: Navigating the Ethical Maze AI in Legal Practice

This AI University session, Navigating the Ethical Maze: AI in Legal Practice, focuses on the ethical responsibilities of lawyers when using technology, particularly artificial intelligence. Hosted by Sateesh Nori and featuring Professor Ray Brescia of Albany Law School, the session explores how AI can both support and challenge core legal values like access to justice and competent representation. Professor Brescia discusses whether it is unethical not to use technology to address the justice gap and highlights updates to legal ethics rules, such as Comment 8 to Rule 1.1, which now emphasizes the duty to stay current with relevant technology.

Lecture 5: Change Management

In this AI University session, Sateesh Nori from Just-Tech leads a panel on managing change when introducing AI into nonprofit legal work. Joined by Tony Lu (Just-Tech), Alexander Horwitz (LSNYC), and Tom Martin (Laudora), the discussion focuses on how to bring AI into existing workflows without causing disruption. Alexander explains how LSNYC is using generative AI in non-client-facing areas like finance and knowledge management to help staff learn the tools safely. The goal is to build familiarity and trust through small steps, creating internal advocates and laying the groundwork for broader AI use across the organization.

Lecture 6: Client Facing AI Tools

In this final AI University session, Sateesh Nori from Just-Tech leads a deep dive on client-facing AI tools in nonprofit legal services. Joined by Tom Martin (LawDroid) and Cherie Gilchrist (Legal Aid of North Carolina), the panel explores using AI chatbots to provide legal information directly to clients. Tom demonstrates LawDroid Builder, showing how organizations can create custom knowledge assistants without coding. The session highlights user testing, prompt design, and safeguards to ensure accuracy while respecting legal boundaries. The goal is to expand access to justice by empowering clients and freeing up staff to focus on complex legal work.
